Algiers, Algeria | January 21st, 2025 — In an apparent attempt to deflect criticism and assert his position within the fractured French government, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has reignited tensions with Algeria, making inflammatory statements that reveal the deepening schism among France’s executive officials. Retailleau’s remarks, delivered during an interview with the right-leaning BFM TV, accused Algeria of disrespecting international law and claimed France had suffered an “insult” following Algeria’s refusal to accept the controversial deportation of influencer “Boualem.”
Retailleau’s inflammatory rhetoric marks a continuation of his earlier statements made on January 10, which sparked backlash not only from Algerian officials but also within his own government. The deportation, orchestrated through an administrative decision lacking legal and diplomatic foundation, was described by Retailleau as an affront to France—a claim dismissed days later by Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.
Barrot, speaking on RTL Radio, refuted Retailleau’s assertions, emphasizing the need for diplomatic calm and dialogue with Algeria. “It is imperative to avoid escalating tensions unnecessarily. My focus is on resolving issues, not creating crises,” Barrot stated, expressing readiness to visit Algeria to repair relations if approved by Algerian authorities.
Retailleau’s response—doubling down on his narrative of Algeria’s alleged “disrespect” and suggesting measures, such as terminating the 1968 Migration Agreement—has drawn sharp criticism across the French political spectrum. Former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin lambasted Retailleau’s approach without naming him directly, warning that dismantling agreements such as the 1968 treaty would contradict France’s humanitarian, historical, and geographical obligations.
The 1968 Migration Agreement, heavily amended in 1986, 1994, and 2001, governs the movement of individuals between France and Algeria. Its renegotiation has long been championed by far-right figures, including former French Ambassador to Algeria Xavier Driencourt, whose hardline stance echoes the divisive rhetoric gaining traction in France’s political discourse. Efforts to revise the treaty have repeatedly failed, most notably under former President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2011, due to its entrenched bilateral nature and the complex dynamics of Franco-Algerian relations.
Retailleau’s provocations also place him at odds with France’s diplomatic corps, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which oversees the sensitive and historically charged relationship with Algeria. Barrot’s subtle rebuke underscored this tension, as he reminded Retailleau that managing Algerian relations is the prerogative of the Quai d’Orsay, operating under directives from President Emmanuel Macron.
Prominent French political figures, including Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure, left-wing politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon, and former presidential candidate Ségolène Royal, have voiced strong opposition to the growing influence of far-right ideology in shaping France’s foreign policy. They have warned against allowing nationalist sentiments rooted in colonial nostalgia to dictate the country’s relationship with Algeria, a vital partner in North Africa and a historical ally.
As voices of reason within France’s political establishment push back against the far-right’s divisive agenda, Algeria remains steadfast in its demand for mutual respect and equitable dialogue. Retailleau’s actions, far from strengthening France’s position, risk isolating his country and jeopardizing decades of bilateral cooperation crucial for regional stability and shared prosperity.
