ALGIERS, February 13, 2024 – Renowned French lawyer accredited to the International Criminal Court (ICC), Gilles Devers, drew parallels between the Palestinian and Western Saharan issues, considering them similar with shared commonalities.

In an interview with the national channel “El Watania TV,” the lawyer representing the Polisario Front highlighted, “There are commonalities between the two issues, most notably colonization through the use of military force.” Another shared aspect, he noted, is “the right to self-determination, granting people or local inhabitants the full right to choose the form of authority and its realization freely and without any external interference.”

Devers continued, stating, “The Western Sahara issue has made significant progress in international courts.” He cited, “The exclusion of Western Sahara waters from the fishing agreement between Morocco and the European Union since 2007, meaning Morocco cannot exercise sovereignty over fishing in the waters surrounding its territory or its economic zone.”

According to the accredited lawyer from the Lyon Bar, the same movement that fought to halt the exploitation of fishery resources in Western Sahara will now fight to stop the exploitation of agricultural products.

In the context of ongoing discussions about Western Sahara and the illegal and illegitimate exploitation of subterranean and maritime resources owned by the Sahrawi people, French lawyer Gilles Devers explained that “the legal struggle will take on a new dimension, this time encompassing airspace management and aircraft freezing.”
