Algiers, Algeria | June 2nd, 2024 — Following the tragic bombing of a displaced camp in Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, by the army of the Zionist entity, several major cities in France have taken a poignant stance by dimming their lights in memory of the Palestinian victims.
Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan expressed profound sorrow, stating, “the horror of the deadly strikes on Rafah revolts us and touches us to the core of our humanity.” In solidarity, the lights of the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde were turned off in Marseille.
Mayor Payan urged all mayors in France to join this symbolic gesture. Consequently, mayors in Montpellier, Lyon, Nantes, Grenoble, and Bordeaux followed suit by dimming the lights of their city halls. “We turn off our lights and keep our eyes open,” declared Pierre Hurmic, elected official of Bordeaux.
In Lille, Martine Aubry, mayor of the city and former minister, echoed the sentiment, expressing shared anger in the face of the horrors of the “deadly strikes on Rafah” and announcing the extinguishing of lights in several public buildings.
Symbolic Solidarity and Call for Peace
The solidarity shown by French mayors reflects a growing concern and condemnation of the violence inflicted on Palestinians. By dimming the lights of their cities, these mayors symbolically stand in solidarity with the victims, emphasizing the urgent need for an end to the violence and oppression in the region.
