Algiers, Algeria | February 12th, 2025 — In a calculated and insidious move, Moroccan propaganda outlets, backed by French far-right media, have unleashed a vicious disinformation campaign against Algeria. The orchestrated attack, designed to sow discord between Algiers and Damascus, falsely claims that Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf requested the handover of 500 Algerian and Sahrawi fighters allegedly involved in Syria’s conflict, fighting within the ranks of Bashar al-Assad’s army.” This baseless allegation, fabricated to tarnish Algeria’s reputation and disrupt its recent diplomatic overtures, has been widely circulated by Radio Monte Carlo International, a media outlet operating under the influence of France’s far-right establishment—an ally of the Moroccan regime.

A Slanderous Assault on Algerian Diplomacy and National Security

The disinformation campaign, propagated through French and Moroccan media networks, appears to be a direct retaliation against Algeria’s strategic foreign policy achievements. Algeria’s recent rapprochement with Syria, signified by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s decision to dispatch Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf to Damascus, has caught the Moroccan regime off guard, prompting a hostile reaction. The malicious reports falsely claim that Algeria is seeking the repatriation of so-called Algerian fighters who allegedly participated in Syria’s war. Such fabrications serve as a desperate attempt to create tensions between the two nations and obstruct the revitalization of Algerian-Syrian cooperation.

This orchestrated media offensive is not merely a diplomatic attack; it is a direct assault on the integrity of the Algerian military and its leadership. The campaign follows a well-documented pattern of targeted smear operations against Algerian security officials, including the recent defamation attempts against General Nacer, the director of internal security. By fabricating false narratives, Morocco and its French allies aim to undermine Algeria’s military and diplomatic credibility on the international stage.

Discrediting Algeria’s Diplomatic Successes

The timing of this disinformation blitz is no coincidence. It comes as Algeria solidifies its strategic energy cooperation with Nigeria and Niger by signing the foundational agreement for the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP). The success of this trilateral energy project directly contradicts Morocco’s long-standing efforts to push its own fictitious gas pipeline project with Nigeria—an initiative widely dismissed as unrealistic. The Moroccan regime, increasingly isolated on the regional stage, seeks to distract from Algeria’s growing influence by fabricating baseless allegations aimed at destabilizing its diplomatic achievements.

Moreover, the Moroccan regime and its French backers are desperate to derail Algeria’s efforts to re-establish strong ties with Syria, a move that threatens their geopolitical interests. Morocco’s calculated campaign against Algeria’s diplomatic outreach underscores its frustration at Algeria’s rising stature in the Arab world and its role as a key mediator in regional affairs.

The Moroccan-French disinformation campaign is yet another reminder of the lengths to which hostile actors will go to undermine Algeria’s growing influence. However, Algeria’s unwavering diplomatic vision and strategic partnerships continue to strengthen, undeterred by the desperate attempts of its adversaries.
