French Municipality Mayor of Moroccan Descent Jamila Habsaoui Arrested with Large Drug Haul

Algiers, Algeria – April 9, 2024- French authorities have announced the arrest of Jamila Habsaoui, the mayor of Avallon, along with two of her siblings, following the discovery of 70 kilograms of cannabis in her residence. The operation, conducted by specialized units of the French security forces and gendarmerie, uncovered the drug stash in the mayor’s home, leading to the apprehension of six other individuals linked to the same case.
According to reports in the French press, one of Habsaoui’s siblings is known to be involved in drug trafficking, raising questions about the extent of familial involvement in illicit activities. While authorities are investigating whether Habsaoui was aware of the drugs in her home, they have also stated that her father and sibling reside with her, complicating the matter further.
Hugh De Ville, the public prosecutor, stated to AFP that Jamila Habsaoui, who has served as mayor of Avallon since 2021, was detained following raids on her residence and workplace as part of an investigation into drug trafficking in the small town, which has a population of approximately 6,000 inhabitants.
During the raids, investigators searched Habsaoui’s residence, the municipal building, and the pharmacy where she works as a pharmacist. While the exact quantity of drugs found in her home has not been disclosed, a reliable source familiar with the investigation revealed that at least 70 kilograms of cannabis were seized.
In addition to the cannabis, authorities also confiscated 983 grams of cocaine, 7000 euros in cash, and around 20 gold bars during the operation. A total of seven individuals, including Habsaoui and two of her siblings, have been detained for questioning in connection with the case.
The raid conducted by security forces is part of a broader crackdown on the escalating drug trade in French cities and towns.
