ALGIERS- The seventh summit of leaders from gas-exporting countries kicks off today in Algeria, chaired by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the Abdellatif Rahal International Conference Center.

The event is anticipated to culminate in the “Algiers Declaration,” paving the way for a fruitful partnership and a shared vision to ensure the balance of the gas market while appreciating the role of natural gas in the energy mix.

The summit will feature the launch of a strategic dialogue and broad partnership to pave the way for a “secure and sustainable” energy future in a unique international geopolitical context. Additionally, innovative technological solutions for the development of the global gas industry will be discussed.

Leaders from participating countries have been arriving in Algeria since yesterday, including the Presidents of Mauritania, Senegal, Tunisia, Iran, and the head of the Libyan Presidential Council.

Yesterday, an exceptional ministerial meeting was held to elevate recommendations and proposals to the leaders’ meeting. Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, described the meeting as “highly productive” and characterized by “dialogue and cooperation.”

The forum, established in 2001, includes 12 member countries: Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. Additionally, there are 7 observer countries awaiting official membership, including Angola, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Malaysia, Mauritania, Mozambique, and Peru, with Senegal’s official membership scheduled for April following approval of its accession request during Friday’s ministerial meeting.

Member countries represent 70% of global natural gas reserves and approximately 40% of global gas exports. Furthermore, the forum ensures over half of liquefied natural gas exports and 47% of pipeline exports.
