Algiers, Algeria | September 19th, 2024 — At the World Energy Conference “Gastech” in Houston, Sonatrach’s CEO, Rachid Hachichi, reaffirmed the company’s strong commitment to reducing carbon emissions and accelerating renewable energy initiatives, positioning Algeria as a significant player in the global energy transition.
During a working session, Hachichi outlined Sonatrach’s extensive decarbonization efforts, emphasizing the company’s ambitious goal of achieving “Zero Routine Flaring” by 2030. He presented renewable energy projects, particularly photovoltaic solar plants, as essential components of this strategy. These initiatives not only reduce Sonatrach’s internal electricity consumption but also optimize the use of gas resources by freeing substantial amounts for more efficient applications.
Hachichi also stressed Algeria’s competitive advantages in the renewable energy landscape, highlighting its future role in the production and commercialization of green hydrogen. Sonatrach’s climate strategy, as detailed by Hachichi, focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing the integration of renewable energy sources, and developing carbon capture solutions. The approach includes both natural carbon sinks and advanced technological methods to absorb emissions, aiming for a sustainable balance between emission production and capture.
In his remarks, Hachichi underscored the crucial role of natural gas in the global energy transition, pointing out its relatively low environmental impact compared to other fossil fuels. He emphasized natural gas as one of the cleanest hydrocarbon resources, vital for advancing toward cleaner energy solutions while maintaining global energy security.
On the opening day of Gastech, Hachichi shared the stage with industry leaders such as the CEOs of ExxonMobil, ENI, and Baker Hughes in a panel discussion, where the focus was on innovation, sustainability, and the future of energy. These discussions reflected the growing consensus on the role of natural gas and renewable energy in shaping the future of global energy markets.
