Gaza: Algeria Condemns “Zionist Atrocities” in Strongest Terms

Algiers, Algeria | May 29, 2024 — Algeria vehemently condemned the daily atrocities and provocations committed by Zionist occupation forces in Gaza, including military operations in Rafah, on Wednesday.
The Situation in Gaza is Now Unbearable
Rachid Bladehane, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva, voiced the nation’s deep concern over the catastrophic humanitarian situation during the 77th World Health Assembly. He cited a death toll surpassing 35,000 and over 79,000 injuries, with 70% of the victims being women and children.
Referring to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), Bladehane highlighted the dire health crisis in Gaza, exacerbated by mass displacements, lack of access to healthcare, water, and sanitation, and rapidly spreading epidemics severely affecting children. “The situation in Gaza is now unbearable,” he declared.
An Extremely Dangerous Escalation
Bladehane emphasized that Palestinians face a dire choice between a swift death from sophisticated weaponry—whose supply to the occupier must cease—and a slow death from famine and disease, underscoring the urgent need to lift the blockade and deliver essential aid. He asserted that the current dangerous escalation confirms Israel’s colonial occupation plans to exterminate the Palestinian people.
“The catastrophic situation we have reached is the result, as everyone knows, of the unbearable arrogance and impunity enjoyed by the occupier, accustomed to preferential treatment by the international community, and believing itself to be above accountability,” he denounced.
Impose an Immediate and Lasting Ceasefire
Algeria, echoing the call of the WHO Director-General, urged for the imposition of an immediate and lasting ceasefire. Bladehane called on the international community, humanitarian organizations, and global conscience to intervene immediately to stop these barbaric acts that violate international humanitarian law and basic human values. He reiterated Algeria’s stance that the only solution to the Palestinian issue lies in granting Palestinians their legitimate rights, including the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with El Quds as its capital.
Bladehane concluded by thanking the WHO for implementing a comprehensive intervention plan to address the humanitarian and health crisis, ensuring health services, and coordinating humanitarian efforts despite significant security challenges.
