Gaza: Bendjama Speaks on Adoption of Algeria’s Initiative at Security Council

ALGIERS- Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, addressed the adoption of Algeria’s initiative for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip by the UN Security Council on Monday.
In his speech following the resolution vote, Ambassador Bendjama first expressed gratitude to all Security Council members for their flexibility and constructive work during negotiations.
He recalled Algeria’s commitment after the vote on its resolution last February to re-engage the Security Council and spare no effort to ensure its responsibilities were upheld. Today, he stated, Algeria returns accompanied by “all elected countries, delivering a clear message to the Palestinian people: the international community, in all its components, feels your suffering and has not abandoned you.”
Adoption of the Resolution Marks the Beginning
Ambassador Bendjama emphasized that the adoption of today’s resolution “marks only the beginning of the journey towards realizing the aspirations of the Palestinian people.”
Algeria, he continued, “hopes to see all parties honor this resolution so that the bloodshed and suffering cease immediately and unconditionally.”
Bendjama asserted that it is the duty of the Security Council to ensure the implementation of its resolutions.
Furthermore, Ambassador Bendjama assured that Algeria, in line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will return to the Security Council to continue its efforts to ensure that the State of Palestine achieves its rightful place as a full and sovereign member of the UN.
A Precedent in the Action of the Security Council
A notable precedent has been set with the adoption of the resolution, showcasing the adeptness of Algerian diplomacy and its mastery of the workings within the United Nations.
This marks the first instance where all elected members have presented a resolution to the Security Council regarding the Palestinian issue.
Moreover, it signifies the first time since the onset of the barbaric aggression against the Gaza Strip over five months ago that the Council has managed to pass a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire to halt the bloodshed in Gaza.
Last month, the Security Council did not adopt Algeria’s proposed resolution due to the veto wielded by the United States. However, Algeria, with the support of Russia and China, successfully thwarted the adoption of the biased resolution proposed by Washington last Friday.
