Algiers- Algeria, May 13, 2024 – Mohamed Hamel, Secretary-General (SG) of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), is set to begin a two-day working visit to Algeria starting Tuesday, announced the Ministry of Energy and Mines on Monday.
During his visit to Algeria on May 14th and 15th, Mr. Hamel will hold meetings with the Minister of Energy and Mines and other sector officials, the statement said. It emphasized that this visit is part of efforts to strengthen joint cooperation between Algeria and the GECF in the fields of scientific research and innovation. On this occasion, a plan and a program of action for the short, medium, and long terms of the Gas Research Institute (GRI) will be established. The GRI was inaugurated on February 29th in Algiers, on the sidelines of the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the GECF, hosted in the Algerian capital.
The GRI aims to be a center for innovation and research dedicated to enhancing understanding and application of gas-related techniques worldwide. It is the result of a convention signed in early 2023 between the GECF and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, stipulating its headquarters to be in Algiers.
The upcoming discussions are expected to focus on enhancing research capabilities, promoting innovation, and strengthening collaboration between Algeria and the GECF member states. The GRI, as a flagship institution, is set to play a pivotal role in advancing gas-related knowledge and technologies, contributing to sustainable development in the energy sector.
