Algiers, Algeria | May 20, 2024 — The Algerian automotive industry is set to receive a significant boost with the announcement of two new Chinese automotive manufacturers, Geely and Jetour, planning to establish production plants in the country. This development marks a crucial step towards diversifying Algeria’s industrial base and enhancing local manufacturing capabilities.

Geely Takes Its First Steps Towards an Algerian Manufacturing Plant

Having made its presence felt in Algeria since the resumption of new vehicle imports in 2023, Geely, through its Algerian distributor Sodivem, has expressed a strong commitment to investing in the country. Geely has now initiated concrete steps towards establishing an automotive manufacturing plant in the Wilaya of Batna. The announcement was made following a visit by a delegation from Geely Automotive Company and Sodivem to Batna, where they met with the region’s top official, Mohamed Ben Malek.

During the visit, the Chinese delegation presented their investment project, which requires a 50-hectare site. The Wali of Batna, Mohamed Ben Malek, welcomed the initiative, proposing several potential locations, including the Ain Yaqout industrial zone, Djerma activity zone, Lazhar activity zone, and Zana El-Bayda activity zone. Additionally, the delegation was offered the possibility of revamping the former Kia automobile factory, which is currently undergoing administrative procedures for state acquisition.

The establishment of Geely’s manufacturing plant in Batna is expected to diversify the region’s investments, stimulate economic growth, and create numerous job opportunities for the local youth. The first Geely car produced in Algeria is anticipated to roll off the assembly line by 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s industrial development.

Jetour Officially Launches Its Commercial Activities in Algeria

Amidst the anticipation of the 2024 vehicle import quotas, Chinese automotive brand Jetour has officially launched its commercial operations in Algeria. The launch event was held at the Mohamed-Boudiaf Complex in Algiers, where Jetour’s range of vehicles was showcased. Anis Benhamadi, CEO of Revolva Algeria, the official distributor of Jetour, outlined the brand’s ambitious plans for local manufacturing. Jetour aims to establish a production plant in Bordj Bou-Arréridj, with the first vehicle expected to be produced by December 2025.

Jetour’s initial commercial strategy involves developing a distribution network that currently includes four agents, with plans to expand to 28 dealerships across the country. The vehicle lineup primarily features SUVs such as the Jetour X70, Jetour X70 Plus, Jetour Dashing, Jetour X90 Plus, and Jetour T2, with prices ranging from 2,999,000 DA to 9,700,000 DA.

A Promising Future for Algerian Automotive Manufacturing

The entry of Geely and Jetour into the Algerian market represents a significant advancement in the country’s automotive sector. These projects are expected to not only boost local production capabilities but also reduce reliance on vehicle imports, stimulate economic growth, and create numerous job opportunities. The collaborative efforts of Algerian and Chinese enterprises are poised to transform the landscape of the Algerian automotive industry, paving the way for a more self-reliant and robust industrial economy.

As these initiatives come to fruition, they will contribute to Algeria’s long-term industrial strategy, enhancing the country’s position as a key player in the global automotive market.
