General Saïd Chanegriha Hosts AFRICOM Commander Michael Langley for Strategic Discussions

Algiers, Algeria | July 23rd, 2024 — General Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP), hosted General Michael Langley, Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. This visit, marking General Langley’s second trip to Algeria since his appointment to AFRICOM, was an occasion for discussing strategic military cooperation and addressing pressing security challenges on the African continent.

The reception ceremony commenced with national honors, including the display of the Algerian flag and military salutes, conducted by various ANP units. In attendance were key figures including the Secretary-General of the Ministry of National Defense, Commanders of the Forces, heads of departments, and senior officials from both the ANP and the Ministry of Defense, alongside members of the American delegation and the U.S. Ambassador to Algeria, Elizabeth Moore Aubin.

During the meeting, General Chanegriha welcomed General Langley and emphasized Algeria’s ongoing efforts to bolster joint African action against terrorism and violent extremism. “I would like to extend a warm welcome to you on your second visit to Algeria as AFRICOM Commander,” General Chanegriha stated. “This visit underscores the excellence of our military cooperation, marked by pragmatism and mutual respect.”

He further highlighted Algeria’s role as a coordinator under the African Union (AU) mandate in the continental fight against terrorism. General Chanegriha outlined several initiatives launched by Algeria, including the AU Action Plan for Counter-Terrorism, activation of the African Counter-Terrorism Fund, establishment of an African list of individuals and entities involved in terrorism, and the implementation of an African arrest warrant.

“We remain committed to supporting any African initiative and reinforcing AU efforts to ensure the continent can meet its security challenges effectively,” General Chanegriha affirmed. He assured full readiness to enhance bilateral military cooperation and explore realistic ways to achieve continental and regional security objectives, particularly in North Africa.

General Langley expressed his satisfaction with the visit, noting it provided an opportunity to discuss various regional and international security issues with ANP leadership. He highlighted the potential for deepening bilateral military collaboration between the U.S. and Algeria.

The meeting concluded with the exchange of symbolic gifts and General Langley signing the ANP’s guestbook, marking the successful culmination of a significant diplomatic and military engagement.
