Germany Acknowledges Algeria’s Central Role in African Conflict Resolution

Algiers, Algeria | January 26th, 2025 — Germany has reaffirmed Algeria’s pivotal role in addressing conflicts and promoting stability in Africa, particularly in the politically and security-sensitive regions of North and West Africa. This recognition came from Germany’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Katja Keul, during her visit to Algiers, where she held in-depth discussions with Algeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf.

In an official statement released by the German Foreign Ministry, Keul underscored Algeria’s indispensable position as a key actor in African conflict resolution. “Algeria is a principal player when it comes to addressing regional issues and resolving conflicts in North and West Africa,” Keul declared, acknowledging the country’s longstanding mediation efforts and strategic contributions to peace and stability across the continent.

The discussions between Keul and Attaf revolved around intensifying bilateral political dialogue on regional security. Germany expressed its intent to gain a deeper understanding of Algeria’s perspectives and on-the-ground realities in the Sahel-Saharan region, an area heavily impacted by political unrest, terrorism, and organized crime. Keul emphasized that Algeria, due to its geographical location and active role in African diplomacy, is uniquely positioned to address these pressing challenges.

“Algeria is particularly affected by the political and security dynamics in the Sahel region,” Keul stated, highlighting the necessity for Germany and Algeria to collaborate closely in navigating the complexities of the region. She commended Algeria’s proactive stance in fostering inclusive dialogue, its mediation efforts in Mali, and its commitment to a comprehensive approach to regional stability.

The visit also shed light on Algeria’s broader contributions to African development and security, including its leadership in promoting sustainable economic development and its advocacy for African unity. For its part, Germany reaffirmed its readiness to partner with Algeria in initiatives aimed at countering terrorism, addressing migration challenges, and advancing peacebuilding efforts.

The strategic dialogue between the two nations comes at a time when the Sahel-Saharan region faces unprecedented threats exacerbated by climate change, social unrest, and geopolitical tensions. Both sides agreed on the urgency of coordinated action, leveraging Algeria’s regional expertise and Germany’s resources to tackle these challenges effectively.
