Algiers, Algeria | September 26th, 2024 — Building on its recent achievements, the public cement group GICA is setting ambitious targets to elevate its export capacity to 10 million tons in the coming years. This initiative aligns with Algeria’s national strategy to diversify revenue sources beyond the hydrocarbon sector, reflecting the country’s broader economic vision for sustainable growth.

The Ain Touta cement complex, a subsidiary of GICA, has marked a significant milestone in technological advancement, as highlighted by its CEO, Moumar Bahloul. Located in Batna, this facility has achieved an impressive production capacity of one million tons of cement annually, contributing to GICA’s total output of 19.5 million tons across the nation.

A cornerstone of GICA’s offerings is clinker, a vital material that is gaining traction in both African and European markets. The clinker is produced using locally sourced raw materials from three quarries covering an area of 296 hectares. The manufacturing process is fully automated, ensuring rigorous quality control at each stage—from extraction to final production.

Salim Hanach, the plant’s deputy director, emphasized during the celebration of the facility’s 38th anniversary that the environmentally friendly clinker is exclusively produced from local materials. The composition comprises 70% limestone and 30% clay, with an additional 2% of iron sourced from the mines of Ouenza and Tébessa.

After undergoing a crushing and processing phase in a kiln at 1450 degrees Celsius, the final product meets the highest environmental standards. The factory has invested nearly 200 billion centimes in advanced filtration systems to mitigate pollution, showcasing its commitment to sustainable practices.

Exporting Success

In its international pursuits, the Ain Touta plant has already successfully exported 60,000 tons of clinker to Tunisia. Other subsidiaries of the GICA group have also shipped this material to various countries across Africa and Europe, including Italy.

In 2023, GICA’s exports of cement and clinker reached a remarkable 6 million tons, generating revenue of 24 billion dinars, as reported by Hayat Lazri, the company’s communication director. With certifications from European and American standards already secured, GICA is positioning itself as a pivotal player in Algeria’s export-oriented economy, poised to make significant contributions to the nation’s economic diversification efforts.
