Goudjil Hails Algeria’s Growing Influence as a Pillar of African Leadership

Algiers, Algeria | February 16th, 2025 — Algeria has once again cemented its position as a key diplomatic force on the African continent with the election of its ambassador to Addis Ababa and permanent representative to the African Union (AU), Selma Malika Haddadi, as Vice President of the AU Commission. This decisive victory, hailed as a significant achievement for Algerian diplomacy, underscores the country’s growing influence within the African bloc and its unwavering commitment to continental unity and progress.

Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Council of the Nation, expressed his deep satisfaction over this triumph, describing it as a “new diplomatic victory” that reaffirms Algeria’s steadfast advocacy for Africa’s sovereignty and independent decision-making. In a statement celebrating the election, Goudjil emphasized the broader implications of this achievement, highlighting Algeria’s role as a genuine voice for the continent on the global stage.

“A new diplomatic victory with Algeria’s well-earned election as Vice President of the African Union Commission… The people of Africa have chosen their sincere voice at the UN Security Council, standing firm against oligarchic pressures and the adversaries’ propaganda. Algeria’s election is a foundational step towards realizing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision that ‘Africa is the future.’ Congratulations!” Goudjil declared in a tweet.

Haddadi’s appointment is widely seen as a testament to Algeria’s credibility in advocating for African interests and fostering regional solidarity. The election further consolidates Algeria’s leadership in continental affairs, following its successful bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, where it has actively defended African and Global South interests against external pressures and neocolonial influence.

Observers note that this diplomatic success is a direct reflection of Algeria’s strategic foreign policy under President Tebboune, which prioritizes African integration, economic development, and the decolonization of political narratives that have historically marginalized the continent. Haddadi’s new position within the AU Commission is expected to amplify Algeria’s ability to shape key policy decisions, reinforce Africa’s autonomy in international governance, and spearhead initiatives aimed at sustainable development and peacebuilding.
