Algiers- Algeria, May 8, 2024 – Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Council of the Nation, emphasized on Wednesday that National Memory Day, coinciding with the 79th anniversary of the massacres of May 8, 1945, is a moment to reaffirm allegiance to the oath made to the martyrs and to commemorate the heroes of the Glorious Revolution.

“On this National Memory Day, we commemorate the anniversary of the unforgettable massacres of May 8, 1945, a tragic toll of sacrifices and innocent blood shed by betrayal and oppression… A moment to renew fidelity to the pledge made to the martyrs, to honor the heroes of the Glorious Revolution, and to advocate for the revision of international charters and regulations governing human rights to rid them of the hypocrisy that tarnishes their essence,” Mr. Goudjil expressed on his official social media account.

The events of May 8, 1945, marked a significant turning point in Algeria’s struggle for independence, as peaceful demonstrations demanding recognition of Algerian rights were brutally suppressed by the French colonial authorities, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries. National Memory Day serves as a poignant reminder of this tragic episode in Algerian history and pays tribute to the memory of those who laid down their lives for the country’s freedom.
