Algiers, Algeria | December 16th, 2024 — On Monday, Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Council of the Nation, welcomed Mrs. Sharon Anne Wardle, the outgoing Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Algeria, marking the conclusion of her diplomatic mission in the country. This meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on bilateral relations between Algeria and the United Kingdom, rooted in mutual respect, strategic dialogue, and shared interests.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed ways to enhance these relations, particularly through intensified cooperation in economic and trade sectors. Goudjil emphasized the need to expand the parliamentary dimension of the relationship, highlighting Algeria’s growing role in the international arena, especially within the United Nations Security Council.

A Shared Vision for International Peace and Justice

The discussion also delved into the global landscape, which has been marred by escalating violence and tensions. Both parties exchanged views on critical regional and international issues, most notably the ongoing crisis in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories. The Ambassador reiterated the importance of the international community’s role in ending the atrocities committed by the Zionist occupation, as well as the need for urgent action to decolonize Western Sahara. Goudjil reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian and Sahrawi peoples, highlighting the country’s commitment to international legal resolutions.

Building on Diplomatic Achievements

Ambassador Wardle expressed her gratitude for the hospitality extended to her by the Algerian authorities throughout her tenure, acknowledging the significant progress Algeria has made in various fields, including its vital role in international diplomacy. She also pointed to the successful bilateral initiatives she had been part of during her time in Algeria, underscoring the UK’s dedication to further strengthening its partnership with Algeria.

Goudjil reciprocated by stressing Algeria’s openness, under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s leadership, to deepen cooperation with friendly nations, particularly the UK. He called for a further boost to the economic ties, especially in light of Algeria’s ongoing economic renaissance, which is driven by a focus on knowledge-based industries and investment promotion.

Commitment to Non-Interference and International Solidarity

The discussions also touched on Algeria’s firm stance on international issues, with Goudjil reiterating Algeria’s rejection of foreign interference in sovereign matters. He strongly opposed any resurgence of colonialist ideologies, particularly the rise of extreme right-wing forces with exclusionary agendas. Goudjil stressed that international relations must be grounded in the principles of non-alignment and humanism, with the defense of human rights as a central pillar of global diplomacy.

Strengthening Parliamentary Diplomacy

Both Goudjil and Wardle praised the exceptional partnership between the Council of the Nation and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. This collaboration has fostered a successful program aimed at strengthening parliamentary actions and promoting better communication and coordination between the two countries’ legislative bodies.

As the meeting drew to a close, Ambassador Wardle, accompanied by Sally Gill, the Deputy Head of the UK Mission in Algeria, toured the historic headquarters of the Council of the Nation, taking the opportunity to familiarize herself with the building’s rich history and significant role in Algeria’s parliamentary life.
