Algiers, Algeria | February 8th, 2025 — On the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the Sakiet Sidi Youssef massacre, the Speaker of Algeria’s Council of the Nation, Salah Goudjil, paid tribute to this historic event, underscoring its profound significance in cementing the deep-rooted ties between Algeria and Tunisia. In a statement released on Saturday, February 8, 2025, Goudjil emphasized that while France’s colonial forces sought to turn the massacre into a tool of division, history instead immortalized it as a beacon of unwavering solidarity and fraternal unity.

A Massacre That Strengthened the Bonds of Resistance

The events of February 8, 1958, saw French colonial forces launch a brutal airstrike on the Tunisian town of Sakiet Sidi Youssef, killing and wounding dozens of civilians, including women and children. The massacre, intended to sever the bond between the Algerian resistance and its Tunisian allies, instead reinforced the unity of both peoples, galvanizing international condemnation of French colonial aggression.

Reflecting on this tragic yet defining moment, Goudjil stated: “Sixty-seven years after the Sakiet Sidi Youssef massacre, we remember an event that the French colonial regime intended as a massacre of separation, yet history enshrined it as an enduring symbol of honor, solidarity, and shared destiny. It stands as undeniable testimony to the strength of the ties between the Algerian and Tunisian peoples, ties which today are nurtured by the leaders of both nations to reach the highest levels.”

Algeria and Tunisia: A Brotherhood Forged in Blood and Resistance

The commemoration of the Sakiet Sidi Youssef massacre serves not only as a moment of remembrance but as a reaffirmation of the strong and ever-evolving Algerian-Tunisian partnership. The bloodshed endured in the struggle for independence has laid the foundation for a bilateral relationship rooted in mutual respect, cooperation, and an unyielding commitment to regional stability and progress.

Under the leadership of Presidents Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Kais Saied, Algeria and Tunisia continue to strengthen their ties, ensuring that the spirit of Sakiet Sidi Youssef lives on—not merely as a historical event but as a guiding principle for deeper political, economic, and security collaboration.
