Algiers- Algeria, May 8, 2024 – The Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Salah Goudjil, underscored on Tuesday in Algiers that the massacres perpetrated by French colonialism on May 8, 1945, were unmistakably “a tragedy for the nation and the country.” He emphasized that throughout the colonial period, the Algerian people suffered from genocide and efforts to eradicate their identity and religious heritage.

Speaking at a conference at Djamaa El-Djazaïr to mark the National Memory Day and the 79th anniversary of the May 8, 1945 massacres, Goudjil elaborated on how these events were “a tragedy for the nation and the country,” highlighting the inseparable connection between religion and the struggle for the homeland. He recounted significant episodes of the Glorious War of Liberation and the resistance against the French colonizers, detailing their repressive tactics and attempts to erase Algerian national identity and religious heritage.

Goudjil recalled the valor of the mujahideen, their achievements, and the strategic vision of the Revolution’s leaders, emphasizing their united struggle and commitment to national unity. He stressed “the fusion of religion and the struggle for the homeland,” underlining the enduring significance of the November 1 Declaration. Goudjil also expressed appreciation for President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s dedication to preserving the nation’s collective memory and praised the unwavering commitment of the National People’s Army to the nation and its people.

Meanwhile, the rector of Djamaâ El-Djazaïr, Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani, conveyed heartfelt regards to the mujahideen for their sacrifices, highlighting Djamaâ El-Djazaïr as a symbol of Algerian pride and resistance. Goudjil signed the Golden Book of Djamaâ El-Djazaïr, commending President Tebboune’s decision to designate May 8 as National Memory Day and his ongoing efforts to preserve the nation’s memory. At the conclusion of the conference, Goudjil was honored by the rector of Djamaâ El-Djazaïr.

The event was attended by Brahim Boughali, the Speaker of the People’s National Assembly (APN), as well as political and historical figures, representatives of national bodies and institutions, and advisors to the President of the Republic, including Mohamed Chafik Mesbah and Mohamed Seghir Saâdaoui.
