Algiers- Algeria, May 7, 2024 – Salah Goudjil, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, hosted the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Congo, Isidore Mvouba, on Monday in Algiers, where they discussed the current state and future prospects of the longstanding relations between their countries, according to a statement from the Council.
The meeting, held at the Council’s headquarters, provided an opportunity to “assess the current state and future prospects of the historical relations between Algeria and Congo, both of which share the African space with its unique challenges and opportunities, and to explore ways to promote and strengthen them in the parliamentary domain through increased cooperation and coordination between the representatives of the two friendly peoples in line with the directives of the leaders and governments of both nations,” the statement noted.
During the meeting, the two sides engaged in discussions on “current African issues at political, economic, security, and development levels, exchanging views on various regional and international matters of mutual interest.” Goudjil praised the “strong friendship ties between Algeria and Congo, forged during their shared struggle against colonial powers, built on cooperation, solidarity, and support in regional and international diplomatic arenas, and rooted in genuine African values advocating for solidarity and unity among Africans.”
The Council Speaker emphasized the importance of further strengthening the ties between the two countries and enhancing consultation for a productive partnership across all sectors within the framework of the promising African economic integration through the continental free trade area. He underscored that “closer ties between Africans serve as a barrier against schemes and plots that exploit their resources,” contributing to the establishment of peace, security, and stability in the face of the growing international challenges affecting the world and their significant repercussions on the food security of African populations. He also called for “fruitful cooperation between Algeria and Congo in all areas,” highlighting “the favorable investment climate in the new Algeria, supported by legislation that encourages partnerships and wealth creation.”
In the same vein, Goudjil emphasized “Algeria’s prioritization of African countries for their economic revitalization and involvement in all international and African initiatives and mechanisms related to sustainable development on the continent.” Regarding international issues, Goudjil reiterated “Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and its backing of the Palestinian people’s right to resistance until the establishment of their independent state with El Quds as its capital,” stressing that “African experiences with slavery and resource plunder should prompt countries on the continent to reject colonization wherever it occurs and to support people’s rights to freedom, sovereignty, and dignified living.” In this regard, he advocated for “the adoption of clear and unified African positions on the just Sahrawi cause, by working towards decolonization through supporting the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.”
Expressing his delight at visiting Algeria, Isidore Mvouba, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Congo, conveyed “his admiration for the progress and transformation at all levels in the new Algeria.” Mvouba also expressed “the pride of the Congolese people and leaders in the strong relations between Congo and Algeria,” expressing his desire for the enhancement of these relations, particularly in the economic and commercial domains, through increased exchanges, facilitation of movement for individuals, and the establishment of a direct air route between Algiers and Brazzaville.”
Mvouba also affirmed “his country’s readiness to intensify collaboration and exchange expertise in the fields of energy and hydrocarbons,” urging “the exploration of opportunities presented within the framework of the African free trade agreement to establish a bilateral and multilateral African economic bloc, commensurate with the potential and abundant resources of the continent’s countries, to establish a balanced partnership and accelerate sustainable development in Africa.”
Both parties agreed to “strengthen inter-parliamentary cooperation between Algeria and Congo, intensify visits and exchanges of expertise, revitalize friendship groups, and coordinate the positions of legislative bodies in parliamentary forums for the mutual benefit of both countries and all Africans,” the statement concluded.
