Hamlaoui Highlights Algeria’s Enduring Role as a ‘Big Sister’ to African, Arab Nations

Algiers, Algeria | August 27th, 2024 — Ibtissem Hamlaoui, President of the Algerian Red Crescent (CRA), reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast role as a “big sister” to African and Arab nations during an exclusive interview with Dzair Tube on Tuesday. Hamlaoui emphasized Algeria’s leading position in providing humanitarian aid, pointing to recent substantial assistance to Niger, Lebanon, and Mali as clear examples of the nation’s unwavering commitment to regional solidarity.

Algeria’s recent aid mission to Niger saw the delivery of essential supplies aboard four military cargo planes, a gesture that was met with profound appreciation from Nigerien officials, including three ministers who acknowledged Algeria’s crucial support. This operation, Hamlaoui explained, is part of Algeria’s broader strategy to aid countries in need, exemplifying its role as a reliable ally in times of crisis.

Hamlaoui also cited Algeria’s ongoing support to Lebanon, particularly through fuel shipments, as a model of solidarity, while highlighting Algeria’s long-standing aid to Mali and other African nations. “These efforts are a source of national pride, especially under the leadership of President Tebboune,” Hamlaoui noted, reflecting on her observations during field visits to remote villages across Algeria, where she witnessed significant improvements in the availability of basic resources. She attributed these advancements to the government’s dedicated efforts to uplift and develop isolated areas, showcasing Algeria’s commitment on the global stage.

The CRA president underscored the critical role of the Algerian Red Crescent, which, with its extensive network of 1,100 municipal offices, serves as a key facilitator of the state’s humanitarian initiatives. The CRA, as the humanitarian arm of the Algerian government, plays a pivotal role in supporting vulnerable families, the deserving, and individuals with disabilities. Hamlaoui highlighted that the organization’s efforts are continuously reinforced by the support and guidance of President Tebboune, both publicly and behind the scenes.

In her concluding remarks, Hamlaoui emphasized the importance of coordination with provincial authorities to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most. She stressed the value of localized knowledge in these efforts, referencing the saying, “the people of Mecca know its pathways best,” to illustrate the CRA’s reliance on detailed local statistics for prioritizing its humanitarian missions.
