Boudouaou, August 10, 2023 – In a candid and incisive statement, Hamma Salama, President of the Sahrawi National Council and head of the Polisario Front’s 11th Summer University, has exposed Morocco’s desperate endeavors to gain international recognition for its “Moroccanness of Western Sahara” narrative. Salama addressed a conference-debate at the Echaâb Forum during the ongoing event, shedding light on the Makhzen regime’s alliance with the Zionist entity and its bid for autonomy, despite international legal objections.
Salama minced no words in his critique of Morocco’s tactics, asserting that neither its alliances with the European Union, particularly France, nor financial support from Gulf countries have resulted in the recognition it seeks. He lamented Morocco’s missed opportunities for peaceful resolution with the Polisario Front, comparing it to the current situation in the Palestinian conflict, where Morocco’s alignment with the Zionist entity risks isolating the country further.
“Morocco is losing the Palestinian cause without gaining anything in return,” Salama declared, underscoring the realization within Morocco that its normalization with the Zionist entity carries significant dangers
The Sahrawi leader dismissed Morocco’s efforts as a “desperate attempt” to gain legitimacy, noting the dwindling effectiveness of such maneuvers in the face of ground realities. Salama highlighted reports of Moroccan soldiers’ reluctance to engage in conflict with Sahrawi forces, often resulting in severe self-inflicted injuries to evade returning to the frontlines.
Salama delivered a scathing assessment of Morocco’s internal condition, citing political, military, social, and economic collapse. He also pointed to Morocco’s substantial trade in cannabis and psychotropic drugs, targeting Algeria as a prime market. He framed this trade as an attempt to weaken Algeria by causing social disruption, underscoring the Sahrawi people’s awareness of Morocco’s tactics.
Algeria earned Salama’s admiration for its unwavering support of the Saharawi cause. He commended President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s foreign policy initiatives, which have secured Algeria a place among influential nations like Russia, China, and Turkey. Algeria’s recent election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council was hailed as a significant achievement that promises to elevate discussions about the Saharawi cause on the international stage.
In his closing statements, Salama lauded Algeria’s resilience against colonization and oppression, acknowledging the nation’ sacrifice for independence. He highlighted Algeria’s steadfastness as a model for the Sahrawi people’s aspirations to establish a free and independent state dedicated to regional peace and stability.
As the Polisario Front’s Summer University continues its deliberations, Salama’s insightful remarks have shed light on Morocco’s strategies and their perceived futility, while underscoring Algeria’s pivotal role in advancing the Saharawi cause and its commitment to a just and lasting resolution.
