New York, NY – September 19, 2023 – The President of the Republic of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has embarked on a flurry of diplomatic activities during his visit to New York, where he is set to address the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly tonight at 8 p.m. (Algerian time). With a keen focus on promoting Algerian political approaches that align with the theme of this year’s session—human well-being—President Tebboune’s engagements underscore Algeria’s commitment to fostering peace and cooperation on the international stage.

As part of his participation in the UN General Assembly, President Tebboune hosted several high-profile meetings at his residence, signaling Algeria’s dedication to building partnerships and addressing pressing global issues.

Strengthening Ties with Iran:

Yesterday, President Tebboune welcomed the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raïssi, to his residence. This meeting is a testament to Algeria’s efforts to garner support for its political approach among UN member states, including major powers. The discussions held during this encounter reflect Algeria’s commitment to the overarching theme of human well-being at the heart of the 78th General Assembly

Engagement with Ghana:

President Tebboune continued his diplomatic activities at the UN headquarters, where he met with President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana. While the specifics of their discussions remain undisclosed, it is reasonable to infer that the Algerian solution for the Niger crisis and the broader Sahel region, which faces both political turmoil and Western interests due to its abundant natural resources, featured prominently in their dialogue. Algeria’ strategic role in Africa, as highlighted by its Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, aims to amplify the continent’s voice and realize its true political potential.

Advocating for Peace in Palestine:

President Tebboune further demonstrated Algeria’s commitment to peace by meeting with Mahmoud Abbas, the President of the Palestinian Authority. This meeting, attended by Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, and the permanent representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, provided an opportunity to discuss crucial matters related to the Palestinian cause. Algeria has consistently supported the rights of the Palestinian people and continues to champion their cause on the global stage.

Bolstering Bilateral Relations with Switzerland:

In addition to these diplomatic efforts, President Tebboune engaged with his Swiss counterpart, Mr. Alain Berset, at the President of the Republic’s headquarters before the commencement of the 78th UN General Assembly. The meeting, attended by Minister Ahmed Attaf and Ambassador Amar Bendjama, signifies Algeria’s commitment to fostering stronger bilateral ties with Switzerland and its continued dedication to international cooperation.

Algeria’s multifaceted diplomatic endeavors during this critical time underscore the nation’s role as a mediator and peacemaker on the global stage. As the President prepares to address the UN General Assembly tonight, his engagements serve as a testament to Algeria’s commitment to promoting peace, security, and well-being for all.
