Health Minister Issues Urgent Warning on Fireworks Safety Amid Mawlid Ennabaoui Celebrations

Algiers, Algeria | September 13th, 2024 — In light of the upcoming Mawlid Ennabaoui festivities, Health Minister Abdelhak Saïhi has issued a crucial warning about the dangers associated with the use of fireworks and firecrackers. Speaking at a dedicated awareness day focused on the risks of pyrotechnic products, Saïhi emphasized the readiness of hospitals to manage injuries related to these celebratory items.

During his address, Minister Saïhi highlighted the preparedness of healthcare facilities to handle the influx of cases resulting from the use of fireworks. “Hospitals are equipped and prepared to deal with injuries caused by pyrotechnics,” Saïhi stated, noting that, as in previous years, emergency services are on high alert to address the numerous incidents related to these products.

Saïhi’s warning underscores the severe consequences of pyrotechnic accidents. “Every year, we witness painful accidents resulting from the purchase and use of fireworks and firecrackers,” he added. The Minister recalled several grave incidents from the previous year, including the loss of an eye by a five-year-old child and the amputation of a leg by another individual. In total, hospitals received over 70 cases, with five classified as extremely severe.

In his plea for public safety, Saïhi urged media outlets to play an active role in educating families, particularly parents, about the hazards associated with pyrotechnics. He stressed the importance of providing actionable advice and recommendations to ensure safer celebrations. “It is imperative to study this issue thoroughly and disseminate guidance to help prevent such incidents,” he said.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs has announced that Mawlid Ennabaoui, the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUM)’s birth, will take place on Monday, 12 Rabi’ al-awwal 1446H, corresponding to September 16. As the festivities approach, the focus remains on promoting safety and awareness to prevent injuries and ensure a joyous and secure celebration for all.
