ALGIERS- Several higher education unions have expressed their support for the decisions made by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during the Council of Ministers meeting on Sunday.
Abdelhafid Milat, the National Coordinator of the National Council of Higher Education Teachers (CNES), hailed the decisions as a historic day for the university community. Milat believes that these decisions will help to revitalize the Algerian University, which has been waiting for changes to the teacher status since 2008 and the compensation scheme since 2010.
The decision to revise the status is in line with the new vision of the Algerian university, which aims to move from simply training and issuing diplomas to becoming a generator of wealth that contributes to the realization of development programs.
Messaoud Amarna, the Secretary General of the FNESRS, also praised the decisions, stating that they reflect the State’s commitment to making the university the driving force of society. He also welcomed the decision to recruit holders of magisters and doctoral degrees, describing it as a wise move that will help to retain Algeria’ skilled workforce.
Rachid Belhadj, the president of the National Union of University and Hospital-University Professors and Researchers, estimated that these decisions will have a positive impact on the academic community and could help to address the issue of the Algerian brain drain. He believes that the rehabilitation of Algerian skills, which are highly valued by foreign countries, will allow them to consolidate the place of scientific research and advance the ranking of the Algerian University on the world stage.
Overall, these decisions are seen as a positive step towards improving the quality of higher education in Algeria and retaining the country’s talented workforce.
