ALGIERS- In a landmark event, the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, inaugurated the FIAT plant in the province of Oran on Monday. The plant, owned by the Stellantis group, saw the delivery of the first FIAT car, an achievement highlighted by the presence of the Italian Deputy Minister of Economic Development for Enterprises, Valentino Valentini, and Stellantis CEO Carlos Tares.
The rapid completion of the inaugural vehicle underscores the remarkable pace at which this automotive construction facility was established. During his tour of the expansive 40-hectare plant, the minister emphasized that the project aligns with the goal of enhancing economic cooperation between Algeria and Italy in the mechanical industry. Additionally, it reflects the new strategic vision of the Algerian government, aiming to establish a robust foundation for the development of the automotive sector in collaboration with experienced partners.
The minister emphasized the importance of building a national subcontracting network to increase the rate of national integration and leverage local raw materials. He assured that the launch of this project would be followed by others adhering to the same standards of integration and value creation.
Stellantis Eyes Expansion
In this context, Minister Aoun highlighted that attracting foreign investors in the automotive industry is a top priority, serving to gain experience, train a qualified workforce, and establish an industrial hub that serves as a gateway for exports to Africa and the European Union.
According to on-site explanations, the FIAT plant has an initial production capacity of 60,000 vehicles, projected to reach 50,000 cars by the end of 2024 and 90,000 cars by the end of 2026. The plant aims to create 509 jobs by the end of 2023, increasing to 1,200 jobs by the end of 2026.
The inauguration ceremony concluded with the signing of a letter of intent between the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production and Stellantis, signaling plans for the expansion of the Stellantis industrial project in Algeria. This historic moment not only marks a major stride in the Algerian automotive landscape but also signifies the strength of economic collaboration between Algeria and Italy.
