ALGIERS- Sahrawi activist Aminatou Haidar, an alternative Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has urgently called upon the UN to intervene immediately to preserve human rights in Western Sahara, which is currently militarily occupied by Morocco.

Speaking at the Human Rights Council in Geneva during its 55th session, Aminatou Haidar, as reported by the Sahrawi Press Service (SPS) on Tuesday, highlighted the daily abuses suffered by the Sahrawi people at the hands of Moroccan occupying authorities. She emphasized that “all those who defend the Sahrawi people’s right to decide their destiny and independence are subjected to arbitrary arrests, torture, and unfair trials.”

Haidar elaborated on the blatant human rights violations by Morocco, including “the deprivation of the Sahrawi people of all their economic, social, and cultural rights, in addition to the illegal exploitation of their natural resources by Morocco and even by its Western and international partners.”

In this context, the Sahrawi human rights defender expressed her dissatisfaction with Morocco’s election to the presidency of the Human Rights Council, considering it “a serious contradiction with the principles of justice that the Council represents.” She also expressed deep concern about the safety of Sahrawi activists and their families, especially those appearing before the Council to participate in its sessions and testify against Moroccan violations.

Concluding her address, the Sahrawi Gandhi called for not forgetting Western Sahara and emphasized the UN’s responsibility in the decolonization process of this occupied territory. It is worth noting that Aminatou Haidar has received numerous international awards in the field of human rights for her peaceful advocacy, including the Robert F. Kennedy Prize in 2008, the Civil Courage Award in 2009, and the Right Livelihood Award in 2019. The Sahrawi human rights activist was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 for her peaceful campaign for the independence of Western Sahara.
