Algiers, Algeria | June 5th, 2024 — In a significant act of solidarity with the Palestinian people, over 600 professors and staff from Abdelmalek Essaâdi University in Tétouan, northern Morocco, have signed a petition demanding the cancellation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Haifa, “the Zionist entity”.

The local media outlet Yabiladi reported that the petition was announced on Monday following a meeting on May 30th, which included the University President, Al-Moumni Boushti, and twelve other professors. The contentious MOU, signed on September 15, 2022, aimed to foster cooperation in marine sciences, sustainable aquaculture, marine technologies, and ecological research. Eyal David, Deputy Head of Mission for the Zionist entity in Rabat, had previously praised this agreement on social media.

Call for Strong Legal and Political Actions

The petition, framed as a solidarity initiative with the Palestinian people, calls for robust legal and political measures against the Zionist entity. The signatories highlighted the genocide and crimes against humanity inflicted on Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, over the past eight months. They condemned the systematic targeting of higher education institutions and the loss of lives among university presidents, deans, professors, and students.

This move is not an isolated incident. In May 2022, Morocco and the Zionist entity signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance bilateral cooperation in innovation, scientific research, and technology. The agreement was officiated by Moroccan Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, Abdellatif Miraoui, and Zionist Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Orit Farkash-Hacohen.

Furthering these collaborations, the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Morocco and the Technion-“Israel” Institute of Technology established a partnership to promote academic cooperation. Similarly, Euromed University of Fes (UEMF) has collaborated with the Sami Shamoon College of Engineering (SCE).

In November 2023, numerous Moroccan academics and researchers had already shown their support for the Palestinian cause by signing a petition against academic normalization with the criminal entity in response to the war in Gaza. They argued that Zionist universities play a crucial role in developing military and security technologies, thus being integral to the Zionist colonial system.

The recent petition reiterates these accusations, asserting that Zionist academic institutions are complicit in the ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people. The signatories demand a reassessment of academic ties, urging Moroccan universities to cease collaborations that support the Zionist entity’s oppressive actions.
