ALGIERS– Four (4) defendants have been remanded in custody by the investigating judge at the tribunal of Constantine, while another defendant was placed under judicial control following the clandestine exfiltration of Amira Bouraoui to Tunisia.
“In application of the provisions of article 11 of the criminal procedure code, the public prosecutor’s office at the specialized criminal center of Constantine informs the public that Amira Bouraoui left, on 08/02/2023, clandestinely the national territory in the direction of Tunisia, although being the subject of a ban on leaving the national territory (ISTN),” read the press release.
Thus, “the prosecution ordered the opening of an investigation and the presentation of the defendants in the tribunal”, specified the same communiqué.
The investigations revealed that “Bouraoui left the national territory illegally with the help of an organized criminal network, specializing in the smuggling of migrants, including an illegal taxi driver, an official at the border crossing and other individuals with the complicity of a journalist, one of her relatives and her mother”.
“The five respondents were brought, on 19/02/2023, before the public prosecutor’s office at the specialized criminal unit which, pursuant to an introductory motion to conduct a judicial investigation, brought against them the following charges: the formation of a criminal association, illegal exit from the national territory and illicit trafficking of migrants by an organized criminal group”.
