ALGIERS- Zionist recognition of the “Moroccanness” of Western Sahara has become a topic of debate and disappointment for many Moroccans. The recent article published by Telquel.ma, entitled “Morocco-Israel: Shalom Sahara!”, raises questions about whether the Zionist entity truly acknowledges the sovereignty of Western Sahara as part of Morocco. This discussion comes in the wake of the normalization of relations between the Moroccan and the Apartheid regimes two and a half years ago.
Similar to the misleading tweet by former US President Donald Trump, Moroccans once again find themselves being deceived, this time by Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana. Ohana promised to be an advocate for the Jewish state to recognize Moroccan claims over Western Sahara, but the reality seems far from the promises made. Zionist officials and media have made it clear that Tel Aviv never recognized the “Moroccanness of Western Sahara” before the countries of the European Union and the United States of America. This revelation comes as a disappointment to many Moroccans who had hoped for stronger support from the Zionist entity.
Adding insult to injury, the European Commission recently decided not to renew the EU/Morocco fishing agreement, which had been illegally extended to include the waters of occupied Western Sahara. This decision was made pending a verdict by the European Court of Justice (CJEU), expected later this year. The lack of negotiations between the European Union and Morocco regarding the fishing agreement signals further challenges for Morocco’s position in Western Sahara.
While the Makhzen regime in Morocco continues to make concessions to the Zionist entity without proper consideration, the Zionist Entity continues its colonization and conquest of Palestinian territories. The visits of Zionist ministers, military officials, and security personnel to Morocco highlight the Zionist determination to turn Morocco into a protectorate that serves its expansionist aims.
Additionally, as thousands of Moroccans are being recruited as laborers for the construction and settlement projects in Palestinian territories, Morocco expects up to 200,000 Zionist tourists. The granting of land ownership rights to the Zionists and the offer of Moroccan nationality to a million Zionists only add to the concerns about the direction Morocco is taking.
