Algiers, Algeria | August 10th, 2024 — Following her historic gold medal win in the -66 kg boxing category at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif expressed deep gratitude towards President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, acknowledging him as her “primary supporter and the first to cheer for her.”

Khelif, who achieved a commanding 5-0 victory over China’s Yang Liu in the final held at the iconic Roland-Garros, highlighted the special significance of her relationship with President Tebboune. “The President called me right after the final. He has been my primary supporter since 2022. I promised him the gold medal, and I fulfilled that promise. I dedicate this victory to him and to the Algerian people,” Khelif stated.

In a profoundly moving tribute, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune also conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to Khelif. His message of praise highlighted the magnitude of her victory, stating, “We are all proud of you, Olympic champion Imane… Your victory today is that of Algeria, and your gold medal is Algeria’s gold… Thank you. Long live Algeria.” President Tebboune’s words capture the widespread national pride and joy elicited by Khelif’s success, illustrating the unity and celebration felt across the country in light of her historic achievement.

Algeria’s Imane Khelif Crowned Queen of Welterweights at Paris 2024 Olympics

In a historic achievement for Algerian sports, Imane Khelif, aged 25, has claimed the gold medal in the welterweight boxing category at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, held from July 26 to August 11. Khelif’s remarkable victory over the reigning world champion Yang Liu of China in the -66kg weight class has cemented her status among the sport’s elite fighters.

Dominance and Redemption

Khelif’s journey to the gold medal was marked by exceptional performances throughout the tournament, culminating in a decisive victory at the renowned Roland-Garros Arena. This triumph not only secures her place as an elite boxer but also represents a historic milestone for Algeria, marking the nation’s second Olympic boxing gold after Hocine Soltani’s win in Atlanta in 1996.

Khelif’s path to victory was underscored by a dramatic redemption arc. Having been unjustly prevented from competing against Yang Liu in the final of the 2023 World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA), Khelif used the Paris 2024 Olympics as an opportunity to exact her revenge.
