Algiers, Algeria | June 5th, 2024 — The official inauguration of the Bouzina Dam, situated 90 kilometers from Batna, marked a momentous occasion on Tuesday, attended by dignitaries including the Minister of Hydraulics, Taha Derbal, and the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, accompanied by Wali Mohamed Benmalek.

With a formidable capacity of 18 million cubic meters, the Bouzina Dam stands as a critical infrastructure project for the region. Its significance lies in its multifaceted utility, ranging from providing potable water to the communities of Bouzina, Menaâ, Tigharghar, and Larbaa municipalities, to facilitating irrigation across more than 500 hectares of orchards and agricultural terrain.

Minister Derbal, speaking at the inauguration ceremony, underscored the imperative of maximizing the dividends derived from such monumental undertakings, which have received substantial financial backing from the state. This underscores the unwavering commitment of the government, under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to prioritize this pivotal sector, intricately linked with the advancement and daily livelihoods of citizens.

In this vein, Minister Derbal urged sector officials to redouble their efforts in enhancing efficiency, expediting project implementation, and closely overseeing construction sites to bolster public service provision in domains concerning potable water, agricultural irrigation, and sanitation.

Enhanced Dam Reservoir Levels

Earlier on Tuesday, Omar Bougaroua, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Hydraulics, announced that “the reservoir fill level of the 81 dams this year stands at 39%, marking a 4% improvement compared to last year.”

Bougaroua accentuated that dams in the eastern region boasted the highest fill rate, surpassing 67%, while those in the central part of the country registered at 28%. Conversely, in the west, reservoir volumes stored in the region did not exceed 19% of their storage capacity.

Acknowledging Algeria’s water deficit conundrum, akin to other Mediterranean basin nations, Bougaroua expressed optimism that this year’s reserves, buoyed by favorable rainfall, would ensure a consistent supply of potable water throughout the impending summer season.

The inauguration of the Bouzina Dam signifies a monumental stride in fortifying water security and fostering agricultural advancement in the region. As Algeria continues to grapple with its water management challenges, such infrastructural ventures play an instrumental role in meeting the burgeoning demands of its populace and economy.
