Algiers, Algeria | June 6th, 2024 — The Constantine Court of Justice announced, today, the arrest of 59 individuals, including 20 minors, in connection with the violent incidents and vandalism at Hamlaoui Stadium on Monday, June 3.
According to a communiqué from the court, 39 adult suspects have been referred to the Constantine Public Prosecutor’s Office. They are set to face immediate trial on charges of damaging state property, including basic infrastructure during a sports event, and committing violent acts and assaults against public force members during their official duties. These offenses were allegedly carried out with premeditation and involved the use of bladed weapons.
The Constantine Tribunal has granted a request from the defense to adjourn the case until June 20, 2024. In the meantime, 37 of the accused have been placed in provisional detention. The communiqué further noted that investigations are ongoing for the remaining suspects. Once these investigations are complete, the identified individuals will be presented to the court.
Context of the Incident
The violent disturbances at Hamlaoui Stadium resulted in significant damage to public property and substantial disruption of a sports event. The incident involved direct assaults on law enforcement officers, adding to the gravity of the offenses committed.
