Algiers, Algeria | June 10th, 2024 —The Port of Algiers experienced a significant surge in activity during the first quarter of 2024, with remarkable growth observed in both ship movements and cargo traffic. As per the latest report from the Port of Algiers, container traffic exports soared by an impressive 11.67% during this period.
Ship Movements
From January to March, a total of 393 vessels docked at the country’s primary port infrastructure, with 314 operational vessels, meeting 100% of the set target. This reflects a 4.24% increase compared to the same quarter in 2023, aligning with the objectives set by the Algerian Port Enterprise (Epal).
Cargo Traffic
Overall cargo traffic reached 1.93 million tons during this timeframe, marking a notable 4.57% increase compared to the corresponding period last year. This growth is primarily attributed to the surge in container and hydrocarbon traffic.
Breakdown of Cargo Handling
The volume of unloaded goods reached 1,588,409 tons, showing a 3.14% increase, while exports totaled 347,111 tons during the first quarter, witnessing a significant rise from 310,836 tons in the same period in 2023. This increase is largely driven by heightened container and hydrocarbon exports.
Container Traffic
Epal processed a total of 64,917 Equivalent twenty-foot units (TEUs), achieving 97% of the set target. Container traffic saw a notable uptick of 16% between January and March, with a gross tonnage of 535,739 tons.
Infrastructure Investments
The report emphasizes the investments made by Epal in recent years to enhance its operational capacity. Rehabilitation of several docks has optimized port space utilization and increased vessel accommodation capacity. These endeavors aim to attract more maritime traffic, reduce vessel waiting times, and enhance cargo turnover, thereby bolstering the competitiveness of the Port of Algiers regionally.
The Port of Algiers’ robust performance in the first quarter of 2024 underscores its pivotal role as a key maritime hub in the region. With sustained growth in ship movements and cargo handling, alongside ongoing infrastructure enhancements, the port is poised to further solidify its position in facilitating trade and commerce, thereby contributing to the economic development of Algeria and the broader region.
