Algiers, Algeria | October 13th, 2024 — Algeria and India maintain long-standing, historic relations of friendship, which serve as a solid foundation for elevating bilateral cooperation towards more expansive horizons. The State visit initiated by India’s President, Mrs. Droupadi Murmu, on Sunday in Algiers, holds great importance and is part of the historical momentum that has strengthened the relationship and aligned the perspectives of both nations on several regional and international issues of common interest, with a shared commitment to revitalizing economic cooperation.

As founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement, this visit carries further significance. It marks the first time in years that a high-ranking Indian official has visited Algeria—the last being the former Vice President of India, Mohammad Hamid Ansari, in 2016, followed by a visit from Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, Shri Muraleedharan, in 2021.

Diplomatic relations between Algeria and India were officially established in July 1962, rooted in a shared history of anti-colonial struggle. Both countries have since developed strong ties in various sectors, reinforcing dialogue mechanisms, especially after the establishment of a parliamentary friendship group in 2020.

Shared Views on Global Issues

Algeria and India share converging views on numerous international issues, such as the fight against terrorism and extremism, and their joint efforts towards global security and stability. India places great importance on deepening cooperation with Algeria, guided by a renewed vision under the leadership of President Droupadi Murmu, who was elected in 2022.

This approach aligns with the vision of a “New Algeria” under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who seeks to diversify strategic partnerships globally. In a recent congratulatory message to President Tebboune following his re-election, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the strength of the traditional friendship between India and Algeria, based on mutual trust and shared perspectives on regional and international issues.

Trade Exchanges Below Political Relations

Despite excellent political ties, the volume of trade between the two countries has remained below potential, hovering around USD 2 billion in recent years. However, the immense opportunities offered by the positive economic indicators in both countries suggest significant untapped potential.

Prime Minister Modi assured that India is keen on expanding and deepening cooperation with Algeria for the mutual benefit of both peoples. Likewise, India’s new Ambassador to Algeria, Mrs. Swati Vijay Kulkarni, reiterated her country’s willingness to collaborate closely with Algeria across various sectors during her recent credential ceremony with President Tebboune.

Both countries have agreed on the need to strengthen the legal framework governing bilateral cooperation, particularly through discussions aimed at concluding agreements on avoiding double taxation, customs cooperation, and investment promotion and protection. Additionally, they are intensifying meetings between economic operators from both nations.

Aspirations for Significant Growth

Key areas of cooperation between Algeria and India include infrastructure, heavy industries, mechanical industries, hydrocarbons, electricity, mining, railways, as well as pharmaceuticals, textiles, agriculture, petrochemicals, fertilizer production, phosphate and iron processing, water desalination, and information and communication technologies.

In a promising forward-looking vision, both countries aspire to achieve significant growth rates over the next five years. Algeria, for its part, aims to strengthen its economy, positioning itself at the top of African economies with a projected GDP of around USD 400 billion by 2027. India, on the other hand, seeks to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027, maintaining a growth rate of 7% for the third consecutive year.
