ALGIERS- Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, welcomed the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, for a working visit, during which they discussed and signed significant agreements. The visit holds particular significance as it coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome extended to her delegation, Minister Retno Marsudi conveyed that it was an honor for her to visit Algeria for the first time. She emphasized the deep historical ties between the two countries, acknowledging Algeria as a good friend to Indonesia, with connections dating back to the early years of both nations.

According to the Indonesian minister, discussions primarily focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the economic sector. Three crucial areas of collaboration were highlighted during the meeting.

In the realm of political and diplomatic cooperation, both parties agreed to revitalize bilateral mechanisms, including the ministerial-level Joint Commission meeting and high-level bilateral consultations. These events are scheduled to take place in Jakarta during the first half of 2024 and are essential mechanisms in assessing progress and addressing challenges in bilateral cooperation.

Beyond bilateral issues, the two ministers delved into regional and international affairs. Addressing the situation in Palestine, Algeria and Indonesia, while condemning ongoing hostilities by the Zionist entity, called for a permanent ceasefire and urgent, sustainable humanitarian aid. In this context, they emphasized the need to address the root cause of the problem, specifically the illegal occupation of Palestinian lands, ensuring lasting peace for the Palestinian people. Minister Retno Marsudi expressed confidence that Algeria, as the next member of the UN Security Council, would spare no effort in defending the interests of Palestinians.

Moreover, Minister Retno Marsudi commended Algeria’s interest in joining the ASEAN Friendship and Cooperation Treaty. Confirming this, Ahmed Attaf revealed during the joint press briefing that Algeria had officially submitted a request for ASEAN membership. He underscored the importance of building robust relations with ASEAN, aligning with the new direction set by President Tebboune for Algeria’s foreign policy. The two parties also agreed to mutual support in multilateral forums.

On the economic front, Algeria stands as one of Indonesia’s top five trading partners in Africa. Despite steady growth in trade volume, both ministers acknowledged that the current figures do not fully reflect the true potential of their economic collaboration. To address this, Indonesia proposed a preferential trade agreement to foster more sustainable and balanced trade between the two countries.

Additionally, a protocol of agreement on energy and mining cooperation was signed during the visit. Minister Retno Marsudi highlighted the strong partnership between Indonesia’s Pertamina and Algeria in the energy sector. Pertamina, she revealed, is ready to expand its investments in Algeria, including areas such as refining and decarbonization, with a $900 million investment plan until 2048.

The visit and the agreements signed underscore the commitment of Algeria and Indonesia to deepen their diplomatic, economic, and energy ties for mutual benefit.
