ALGIERS- The Air Separation Unit of HELIOS Spa, a subsidiary of Sonatrach, was inaugurated on Wednesday by the CEO of the oil and gas group, Rachid Hachichi, and the executive head of the Oran province, Saïd Sayoud. This inauguration marks a substantial contribution to boosting Algeria’s potential in industrial gas production.
Situated in the Arzew Industrial Zone and covering an area of 16,250m2, the unit boasts a daily production capacity of 205 tons. It is poised to supply the national market, through COGIZ SPA, another Sonatrach subsidiary, with nitrogen, medical and industrial oxygen, as well as argon, as explained by Helios Spa CEO, Boualem Lahmar.
“With this significant volume of industrial gases, this new unit will enable HELIOS Spa to adequately meet the needs of SONATRACH Group’s operational units for nitrogen, as well as the requirements of healthcare facilities for medical-grade oxygen,” states the group in a press release issued after the inauguration ceremony.
Earlier in the day, Rachid Hachichi inspected the construction site of a seawater desalination plant in the Ras-El-Abiad locality, in the Oran province. This project is part of an emergency plan, approved by the President of the Republic, involving the construction of five new desalination plants, each with a production capacity of 300,000m3. The construction of these infrastructures, aimed at mitigating water stress, is entrusted to Sonatrach subsidiaries with an exclusively Algerian workforce. This experience positions Sonatrach to leverage its expertise in international projects.
The construction progress in Oran has reached 45%, thanks to three 8-hour shifts. Hachichi emphasized the importance of adhering to contractual deadlines for project delivery. The desalination initiative underscores Algeria’s commitment to addressing water challenges through strategic and innovative projects.
