Algiers- Algeria, May 13, 2024 – At the El Moudjahid forum, Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, unveiled the latest figures highlighting Algeria’s industrial revival, backed by concrete data and examples.
With the aim of significantly contributing to the country’s GDP, currently standing at 6 to 7%, the industrial sector is set to reach 10% by 2027, spanning across various sectors, such as automobile, cement, pharmaceuticals, and transformation, particularly in the agro-food sector, Aoun revealed.
In the agro-food industry, Aoun pointed out that 90% of active entities are private enterprises, contributing over 50% to the non-hydrocarbon industrial GDP. Highlighting a qualitative advancement, he stressed ongoing efforts to enhance product quality and presentation to boost competitiveness in foreign markets.
Algeria, ranking as the third-largest Arab producer of iron, has witnessed significant progress in construction materials. From being an importer of cement three years ago, Algeria now exports over 20 million tons of cement and clinker. This transformation, from importer to exporter in just three years, is remarkable, with exports totaling $747 million in 2023.
The ceramics industry is also flourishing, with a projected €100 million in exports for 2024. Aoun emphasized government decisions to block imports of locally producible building materials, supporting the growth of the ceramic industry, including exports.
In the steel and iron industry, Algeria ranks third in Arab production, with significant contributions from foreign partnerships like the Oran and Bellara complexes, in addition to the Sider complex. Algeria produced 3.5 million tons of steel in 2022, with an estimated 4.2 million tons for 2024.
In the electromechanical industry, import restrictions have driven domestic production to cover 120 to 140% of national needs, with exports to 36 countries reaching $45 million in 2022 and an estimated $50 million in 2023. Notably, Condor exported $12 million worth of televisions in 2023 to Libya, Mauritania, Yemen, Lebanon, and Egypt.
The burgeoning renewable energy sector is marked by a national program constructing 15 photovoltaic stations in 12 provinces, with 35% national integration. Aoun highlighted four projects with a $550 million investment, capable of producing up to 250,000 solar panels annually.
In the pharmaceutical sector, expected to surpass $4 billion in 2024, local production has drastically reduced import bills, from $1.422 billion in 2022 to a projected $1 billion in 2024. The industry aims for an 80.48% coverage of the local pharmaceutical market by year-end, currently producing over 3400 drug molecules out of 4500 in the national market.
