ALGIERS- In a highly anticipated preliminary ruling, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the highest court under the United Nations, delivered a verdict on Friday in South Africa’s legal action against the Zionist entity, accusing it of genocidal intentions in the Gaza Strip.

First and foremost, the ICJ declared its competence to examine South Africa’s complaint and consequently dismissed the opposing party’s related request.

“We recognize the extent of the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza and are deeply concerned about the loss of human lives (…) Some of South Africa’s accusations regarding the Zionist entity’s actions in Gaza ‘appear to fall within’ the provisions of the Genocide Convention,” affirmed the ICJ during the announcement of its decision. In a preliminary step, the court issued emergency orders to protect Palestinians from the intensive bombardments by the ‘Zionist’ occupier’s forces, ongoing for 110 days and constituting a verified humanitarian catastrophe.

The ICJ ordered the criminal entity to “prevent the commission of all acts within the scope of the Genocide Convention.” It urged immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of basic services and humanitarian aid urgently needed by Palestinians to cope with adverse living conditions.  The Zionist entity was also asked to impose severe sanctions against any incitement to violence, ethnic cleansing, or war crimes against Palestinians.

While the ICJ did not explicitly demand a ceasefire from the Zionist entity, its theoretically binding and enforceable orders aim to halt the military offensive against the Palestinian enclave. The trial is not concluded, and proceedings will continue to determine the direct responsibility of the Zionist entity in acts of genocide, a process that could extend over several years.
