Algiers, Algeria | May 22, 2024 — A recent report by an international organization has revealed that Morocco’s economy heavily relies on sex tourism, positioning the country as the leading nation in North Africa with an estimated 4.3 million sex workers.

The report indicates that Morocco attracts tens of thousands of foreign tourists, facilitated by the Moroccan authorities who simplify visa procedures to boost tourism. With limited alternative sources of income, the kingdom has turned to promoting prostitution as a lucrative tourism product, particularly popular during the winter months in coastal cities and in interior cities like Marrakech, which is also known as a hub for sexual deviance.

Morocco’s notoriety in the realm of prostitution extends beyond its borders, with numerous scandals involving Moroccan women abroad, especially in Gulf countries. The connections established by Gulf tourists in Morocco have encouraged Moroccan women to migrate to these countries, where they are often involved in organized sex trade or employed through agencies as domestic workers.
