ALGIERS- The tightening legal, political, and diplomatic noose around the Moroccan monarchy, deeply embroiled in the “Escobar of the Sahel” scandal, reveals high-ranking military and civilian officials involved in sordid global drug trafficking. Despite ongoing investigations by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and numerous requests for legal assistance dispatched to Morocco, the country remains a sanctuary for hardened drug dealers.
In recent weeks, a scandal has captured headlines in the Moroccan press. A notorious Malian drug trafficker has exposed high-ranking Moroccan officials, including Saïd Naciri, the president of Morocco’s prominent football team, Wydad de Casablanca, and Abdenbi Bioui, the governor of the Oujda region. Both figures are prominent members of the PAM party, founded by Fouad Ali El Himma, the principal advisor to King Mohammed VI, often regarded as the de facto ruler of Morocco. Moroccan authorities are investigating this case, which exemplifies the nexus between sports and drug trafficking.
In this context, Spanish media reports have unveiled the presence of a kingpin, known as the “Messi of Hashish,” who managed to elude Spanish justice by paying an €80,000 bail. Abdellah El Haj Sadek el Menbri, his real name, is now in Morocco, openly engaging in activities such as founding a football team, Wydad Tanger Sair Rafah, where he plays as the captain.
While this scandal may not match the scale of the “Escobar of the Sahel” case, implicating over 200 high-ranking Moroccan officials, both civilian and military, including generals of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), and even Fouad Ali El Himma, the king’s chief of staff, it nonetheless highlights Morocco’s persistent role as a haven for the world’s most dangerous drug traffickers. Numerous UN investigation reports have accused Morocco of being the primary producer and exporter of cannabis resin globally. Furthermore, the revelations confirm Morocco as a global hub for hard drug trafficking. The illicit funds generated are used by Rabat to influence foreign “partners” across various sectors, including sports, human rights, and, notably, its illegal occupation of Western Sahara.
