ALGIERS-  In a special meeting with an Algerian media delegation, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani emphasized the enduring and deep-rooted relationship between Algeria and Iran. He underscored their shared international and regional positions, expressing Tehran’s anticipation for the anticipated visit of President Ibrahim Raisi to Algeria. Kanaani stressed the significance of the meeting between Raisi and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during the Gas Exporting Countries Forum Summit scheduled to be held in Algeria at the end of February, aiming to forge several agreements between the two nations.

During the meeting, Kanaani highlighted that “the relations between Algeria and Iran are ancient and deeply rooted, and we have common international and regional positions.” He affirmed Algeria’s global role in the world’s developments and commended the inspirational nature of the Algerian revolution, describing it as influential for the Iranian revolution.

In a related context, Mr. Kanaani described the Algerian revolution as inspirational to the Islamic revolution in Iran. He praised Algeria’s honorable stances towards his country, noting that diplomatic relations between the two nations were highlighted by Algerian mediation during the presidency of the late Algerian President Houari Boumediene in 1975. This mediation occurred during the Iraq-Iran border conflict concerning the Shatt al-Arab, culminating in the Algeria Agreement. Additionally, Algerian mediation successfully led to a peaceful resolution of the Iranian-American crisis in 1980.

The timing of the Algerian media delegation’s visit coincides with Iran’s commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution. Kanaani spoke about the vital role of media in portraying the truth in Iran, urging the Algerian delegation to convey the authentic narrative of life in Iran. He emphasized that Iran faces a misleading Western media campaign aimed at dividing the people from their government and inciting them against the principles of the Iranian revolution.

Furthermore, Kanaani affirmed Iran’s support for Palestine and condemned the misrepresentation of Iran by Western media, particularly by the Zionist entity and the United States. He emphasized that all elections in Iran, including presidential and parliamentary, are democratic processes.

The Iranian official did not miss the opportunity to address the bilateral relations between the two countries, which are based on their principles opposing domination and tyranny. He highlighted their sovereignty and commitment to unity, serving as formidable barriers against Western impositions. He noted that today, there is significant alignment between Tehran and Algeria regarding many international events and shared perspectives on various issues, particularly the sacred Palestinian cause. This alignment extends to the official level, and at the grassroots level, where both populations stand united in support of just causes and oppressed peoples.

Despite the deep historical ties, Kanaani noted the relatively infrequent mutual visits between the two peoples and emphasized the importance of conveying an accurate image of both nations. He expressed optimism about positive developments in political relations and emphasized that relations between the two countries are progressing positively.

In this context, Kanaani referred to the successful and positive visit of Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf to Iran. He also mentioned the recent visit of the Speaker of the Algerian People’s National Assembly, Ibrahim Bougali, to Tehran, praising the fraternal atmosphere accompanying it.

Kanaani concluded his remarks by congratulating Algeria, its leadership, government, and people, on winning a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. He stated, “Algeria’s presence in this body is instrumental in amplifying and conveying the voices and stances of Islamic and Arab countries on just issues, foremost among them the Palestinian cause and the current suffering of our Palestinian brothers and sisters in the Gaza Strip.” He also warned Muslims against division and the Western-sponsored schemes aimed at severing the bonds of brotherhood among Muslims, spreading venom to achieve their malicious goals at the expense of the nation’s issues and unity.
