ALGIERS- In the wake of the devastating wildfires that have swept through Algeria, claiming the lives of 34 people, including 10 valiant soldiers, Iran has extended its heartfelt sympathy and condolences to its longtime friend. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kan’ani expressed deep sorrow for the loss of lives and offered well wishes for the swift recovery of the injured.
The bond between Algeria and the Islamic Republic of Iran is steeped in a rich history of friendship and shared values. Both nations have overcome struggles to attain independence and have been unwavering in their fight against oppression and terrorism. Now, as Algeria grapples with the aftermath of the wildfires, Iran stands in solidarity with its North African counterpart, reinforcing the strength of their bilateral relations.
For decades, Algeria and Iran have maintained a close political alliance, aligning on numerous regional and international issues. Both countries champion the cause of the Palestinian people, advocate for political solutions in conflict-ridden countries such as Yemen, Syria, and Libya, and prioritize stability in the oil market. Their mutual respect and shared views have solidified their bond, making them indispensable partners on the global stage.
The historical ties between Algeria and Iran date back to the 1960s when Iran was among the first nations to recognize Algeria’s independence. This gesture of support was followed by cultural exchanges and interactions between scholars that further cemented the friendship. Notably, Ayatollah Khomeini, after his return from exile, lauded the Algerian revolution as a source of inspiration for Muslims worldwide, emphasizing unity and solidarity.
Despite some fluctuations in their relationship, diplomatic ties were restored in 2000, signaling a renewed commitment to cooperation and mutual understanding. Algeria’s consistent support for Iran’s rights in international forums, even during the nuclear talks, showcased their unwavering solidarity.
Recent positive developments in the relationship between the two countries, following the elections of their respective Presidents, demonstrate a shared eagerness to enhance collaboration. President Sayyid Ebrahim Raïssi of Iran has expressed his dedication to strengthening economic ties and expanding all-encompassing cooperation with Algeria. On the other hand, President Tebboune of Algeria has shown keen interest in bolstering collaborative efforts in various sectors.
As Algeria faces the aftermath of the wildfires, Iran’s show of empathy and support is a testament to the strength of their enduring friendship. This trying time further highlights the significance of their multifaceted cooperation in working together for the betterment of their peoples and the world at large.
