Algiers, Algeria | May 20, 2024 — Iranian state media has confirmed the tragic death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, alongside all accompanying officials, following a devastating helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan Province.
The incident occurred as the helicopter carrying President Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials lost contact with ground control over 16 hours ago. After extensive search and rescue operations, the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) located the wreckage on Monday morning. Their preliminary statement reported “no sign of life” at the crash site.
In an official statement, Iranian state media announced the deaths of all aboard, marking a significant loss for the nation. The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) initially reported the loss of contact, which prompted an immediate and extensive response involving at least 73 rapid response and rescue teams. These teams were mobilized from several provinces, including East Azerbaijan, Tehran, Alborz, Ardabil, Zanjan, and West Azerbaijan.
The search and rescue efforts were further bolstered by the participation of neighboring countries, such as Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Russia, reflecting a collaborative effort in response to the tragedy.
The death of President Raisi and Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian marks a profound moment of grief not only for Iran, but for the entire Ummah. The government is expected to announce a period of national mourning, and further details regarding the crash and subsequent investigations are anticipated in the coming days.
