ALGIERS- Upon invitation from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is slated to commence a two-day visit to Algeria starting this Saturday. This visit marks a significant occasion, being the first time an Iranian head of state has visited Algeria in 14 years.

The previous visit by an Iranian head of state to Algeria occurred in September 2010, when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad briefly stopped over en route to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

As reported by the Iranian official news agency IRNA, President Raisi will be accompanied by a distinguished delegation, including Minister of Petroleum Javad Owji, expected to play a pivotal role in the summit proceedings.

During his visit, President Raisi is set to address the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit on Saturday, where he will engage with heads of state and senior officials from participating countries. Iran, boasting the world’s second-largest natural gas reserves after Russia, holds an estimated 33,988 billion cubic meters, according to OPEC.

In his speech, the president will articulate Iran’s stance on various GECF policies, underscoring the imperative of enhanced cooperation among member nations. Key areas of emphasis will include the natural gas sector, energy security, and investment opportunities.

In addition to his participation in the 7th summit of gas-exporting countries’ heads of state and government in Algiers on Saturday, President Raisi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Tebboune on Sunday. The agenda will also include overseeing the signing ceremony of bilateral agreements.

Algeria and Iran have a history of collaboration, with notable agreements signed in various sectors such as the automotive industry in 2016 and agriculture, trade, health, higher education, and scientific research in 2010.

During a visit to Tehran in July 2023 by Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, both parties agreed to waive visa requirements for nationals of both countries. Additionally, preparations for the third session of the Joint High Commission and activation of other bilateral cooperation mechanisms were initiated, including the Follow-up Committee and the Political Consultation Commission.
