ALGIERS- In a significant diplomatic move, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has embarked on his first official visit to Algeria, marking the first visit by an Iranian president to the North African nation in over a decade. Raisi’s visit carries multiple objectives, including participation in the 7th meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) and the strengthening of bilateral relations with Algeria.

Departing from Tehran with a high-level politico-economic delegation, President Raisi’s visit underscores Iran’s commitment to engaging with the global community, particularly in the energy sector. The Iranian leader’s visit to Algeria follows an official invitation from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, signifying the importance of bolstering ties between the two nations.

During his stay in Algiers, President Raisi is scheduled to engage in bilateral meetings with key officials from the 19-member GECF, aiming to foster cooperation and address mutual interests in the natural gas industry. Additionally, several memoranda of understanding are expected to be signed, further cementing the partnership between Iran and Algeria.

This historic visit marks the fourth time Iranian presidents have visited Algeria, bridging a gap of approximately 14 years since former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit in 2010. The GECF, established in 2008 with Iran’s initial proposal, plays a crucial role in facilitating dialogue and collaboration among major natural gas producers worldwide.

President Raisi’s participation in the GECF summit highlights Iran’s pivotal role as one of the world’s largest holders of natural gas reserves, ranking second only to Russia. With an estimated 33,988 billion cubic meters of natural gas reserves, according to OPEC, Iran aims to leverage its resources to promote energy security and enhance regional cooperation.

During his address at the GECF summit, President Raisi is expected to articulate Iran’s perspective on various policies concerning the natural gas sector, emphasizing the importance of collective action and investment opportunities for member nations.

In addition to his engagement at the GECF summit, President Raisi will hold bilateral talks with President Tebboune to further solidify cooperation between Algeria and Iran. The agenda includes overseeing the signing of bilateral agreements across sectors such as automotive, agriculture, trade, health, education, and scientific research.

Algeria and Iran have a longstanding history of collaboration, marked by significant agreements in various fields. Notably, both countries have taken steps to facilitate travel and enhance people-to-people exchanges, as evidenced by the recent agreement to waive visa requirements for nationals of both nations.

President Raisi’s visit to Algeria underscores Iran’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with countries in North Africa and beyond, fostering mutual prosperity and regional stability.
