Algiers, Algeria | June 6th, 2024 — Building on their successful venture in Touggourt, the Italian company Ferraresi is now setting ambitious new goals for its agricultural projects in Algeria. The company has announced plans for a substantial $1 billion investment in Timimoun. This announcement was made by Omar Rekkache, the Director General of the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI), during the El Moudjahid Forum.

Extensive Cereal Production and Processing Project

Operating under the brand Best Food, Ferraresi has already executed a project covering 20,000 hectares in Touggourt. Their upcoming project in Timimoun is poised to be even more expansive, encompassing 37,000 hectares dedicated to cereal production and processing. The primary aim of this initiative is to export agro-food products.

Rekkache highlighted the focus on cereal cultivation, which follows the successful outcomes achieved in Touggourt this year. This massive investment is expected to significantly boost Algeria’s agricultural production capabilities, especially critical in the current global scenario where enhancing the agricultural sector is vital for ensuring food security.

The Strategic Value of Saharan Agriculture

The allure of Saharan agriculture is growing among foreign investors, with over 500 projects registered on the investor platform since 2021. This surge underscores the strategic importance of agricultural development within Algeria’s broader economic diversification and food security strategies.

By leveraging the favorable conditions for cereal production in the Sahara, Algeria aims to bolster its standing in the global agricultural market while securing its food supply amidst increasing international demand. The Ferraresi project in Timimoun represents a key milestone in achieving these goals, drawing on international expertise and substantial financial investments to propel growth in the sector.
