Algiers, Algeria | May 22, 2024 — A delegation from the Italian hospital group “San Donato” visited the specialized clinic for orthopedic surgery and functional rehabilitation of victims of work accidents in Misserghine, Oran, under the supervision of the National Social Security Fund (CNAS). The visit aimed to explore and identify avenues for cooperation in the medical, surgical, and training fields.
Deputy General Manager of CNAS, Kheddim Khaled, stated during a press briefing that the visit follows a convention signed on Monday in Algiers with the Italian hospital group. The agreement aims to prepare a joint work program for the medical and surgical care of children suffering from spinal distortion and curvature.
Distortion and curvature of the spine in children are significant health concerns, often requiring treatment abroad. However, Mr. Kheddim highlighted the current vision to address these conditions domestically in collaboration with the Italian group.
The Italian delegation, comprising specialists in orthopedic and cardiac surgery, previously visited the pediatric medical-surgical clinic (CMCI) in Bousmaïl, Tipasa. There, they assessed preparations for upcoming surgical operations on about ten children who would have otherwise been sent abroad for treatment.
Mr. Kheddim emphasized CNAS’s commitment to reducing the number of patients transferred abroad and transferring medical expertise between Algerian physicians and specialists from the Italian hospital group.
Efforts are underway to transform the specialized clinic in Misserghine into a reference center for orthopedic medicine and surgery, as well as for training medical professionals in this field.
James Georges, Director of International Relations at the Italian hospital group, outlined the long-term partnership between San Donato and CNAS, extending beyond ten years. The goal is to reduce the number of patients requiring overseas treatment through international cooperation and physician training programs.
Alessandro Frijona, Director of the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Unit at San Donato, expressed readiness to collaborate with Algerian medical professionals to enhance medical and surgical care in pediatric cardiac surgery and orthopedics.
The cooperation between Algeria and Italy aims to strengthen bilateral friendship through medical initiatives, ensuring long-lasting benefits for both countries.
