Italian Parliamentarian Advocates for Algerian Man Deprived of Residency for Condemning Genocide in Gaza

Algiers, Algeria | October 20th, 2024 — An Italian parliamentarian has called on her government in Rome to reverse the decision to revoke the residency of a young Algerian man who participated in a demonstration criticizing the genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

During her address on Friday, Deputy Stefania Ascari emphasized that the Algerian man, named Saif, has been residing in Italy for ten years and works as a high school teacher, during which time he has had no recorded legal transgressions, underscoring his disciplined character and stable social life.

Ascari stated that the decision to suspend Saif from his job and detain him at the Ponte Galeria deportation center for speaking out against the atrocities committed by Netanyahu in Gaza—resulting in the deaths of over 17,000 children—is unacceptable. She urged the Italian government to reconsider this case.

The Italian opposition firmly rejects any form of political repression within the country, asserting that political expression should not be grounds for deportation or intimidation. Ascari emphasized that the Algerian man has every right to political expression, just as any Italian citizen does.
