ALGIERS- Actress Itziar Ituño, renowned for her portrayal of Inspector Raquel Murillo, also known as Lisbon, in the popular Netflix series “La Casa de Papel,” was the honored guest at the Mediterranean Film Festival of Annaba. Following her appearance in traditional Algerian attire on the red carpet during the opening ceremony the previous evening, the actress held a press conference on the morning of April 24th at the Seybouse Hotel.
During this gathering, she discussed the responsibility and role of artists in raising awareness about the struggles of oppressed peoples and advocating for their rights. “Artists wield significant media influence. Some choose to remain passive, while others utilize their platform to address contemporary global issues. Personally, I lend my voice to just causes, and I believe that festivals offer a valuable opportunity to do so,” emphasized the Basque artist. She also commended the festival’s programming, particularly its focus on Palestinian cinema through the “Viva Palestina” selection, developed in collaboration with the Palestinian Film Institute.
When questioned about the possibility of participating in an Algerian film, Itziar expressed her willingness despite potential language barriers. She highlighted the importance of films being able to cross borders, especially between her native Basque Country and Algeria: “As far as I’m aware, there isn’t an established framework for film distribution cooperation between Spain and Algeria, but I hope that Annaba, through this festival, could become a sort of hub for Mediterranean cinema.”
Furthermore, Itziar Ituño expressed her delight at being part of this event, giving special recognition to the local fish and the warm hospitality of the people of Annaba, whom she encountered during her brief strolls in the city. “Meeting the locals on the streets was the highlight for me,” she stated, before apologizing for having to depart after the conference due to filming commitments, promising to return for future editions.
